[Outline of the Okiagari Koboshi Exhibition in Taiwan]
The founder of the exhibition, Mr. Kenzo Takada, created the event as a symbol of understanding and support for the reconstruction of Fukushima after the Great Earthquake of Eastern Japan.
Through the international project, which has been running since 2013, we have been asking artists all over the world to share their thoughts and perspectives by painting and exhibiting the okiagari koboshi figurines.
Mr. Takada foresees that it will be difficult to visit Taiwan due to the COVID-19 situation, so he will be broadcasting a video message at the venue that he took around the end of July.

“Since this was rather sudden and since time is scarce I tried to prepare a succinct and simple comment. In order to express energy and passion I painted the entire figure in scarlet red. For the facial features I used silver lacquer and modeled the expression after a kabuki performer’s makeup.
I’ve heard that kabuki actors use this style of makeup to emphasize their facial expressions. I hope that when someone meets this little figurine they can sense a touch of humor and gentleness beneath the I-can-do-it!! toughness of the character.
I wish the best for all the people who have overcome hardships in Fukushima and hope their horizon will grow broader and brighter.”
